Hal Purdy designed the course, which was unveiled in 1964. Gaining the most attention were the side-by-side twin par fives, the 6th and 14th which cross the same water hazards. The 14th is shorter, but makes up with water what it lacks in length. The tee shot must carry 125 yards to clear the first of three water crossings and reach a narrow, tree-lined fairway. A carefully played second shot of 160 to 200 yards to the right of center will carry the second hazard and leave an open pitch of about 125 yards over a pond.

The 6th calls for a drive into the left center of the zig-zag fairway to leave a straightaway second shot across the first water hazard to a narrow tree-lined fairway. The shot to the green must traverse a pond complete with fountain and stonework.

The LPGA Tour played the final two editions of the Chrysler-Plymouth Classic at Navesink in 1987 and 1988. Ayako Okamoto won in 1987 with a one-under-par total of 215, a score that was easily eclipsed by Nancy Lopez' scintillating 204 in 1988.
