Along with our new fairways and greens this year we have new fifty yard markers in the fairways. The markers are gold in color and are measured to the middle of the green. On the PGA tour players all have yardage books for every course they play, and in those books there is a yardage called "The Spot." The Spot is 105 yards from the center of the green. The majority of tour players hit their SW (56 percent) that yardage, so when they are laying up or punching out of trouble they try to get the ball near "The Spot." Having a SW in their hand gives them the best percentage to get the ball up and down.
The fifty yard mark for most amateur male golfers should be a half to three quarter SW shot, or mayber a three quarter to full Lob wedge (58 to 60 perecent). For most amateur female golfers, the fifty yard mark should be a full SW or a full PW. The next time you are out on the course or on the range take some time to find out what club works the best from fifty yards. If the player puts in the practice they might find out that they are pretty good from that distance and should see an improvement in score.
